INDIANA UNIVERSITY SOUTH BEND
DISTANCE LEARNING FACULTY CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Spring 2010

On behalf of IU South Bend’s Distance Learning Advisory Board, I would like to invite you to participate in a Faculty Call for Proposals for Distance Learning course development for Spring Semester, 2010. This initiative was developed under the administrative umbrella of Extended Learning Services in collaboration with IU South Bend’s Distance Learning Advisory Board (DLAB). This group includes representatives from the university’s administration, the faculty, Extended Learning Services (ELS), the University Center for Excellence in Teaching (UCET), Information Technology (IT), Instructional Media Services (IMS), the Schurz Library, and Student Services and Enrollment Management.

Applications for Distance Learning Course Development grants are posted at the Distance
Learning Website at distance.iusb.edu.  Priority will be given to proposals where most of the course lectures and requirements are facilitated online. Faculty who teach courses that meet a General Education requirement with high enrollment demand will be given preference however all proposals will be considered that give students access to courses that advance them toward successful completion of their IU South Bend Degree.

Deadline for submission of course proposals for spring 2010 is May 31,  2009.

The faculty who are awarded development grants will receive training and support from UCET based consultants in developing their distance learning courses. Support includes a financial stipend as well as technological and pedagogical consulting with staff in UCET, IT, IMS and the Library.  Currently, stipends are awarded to both the faculty member who develops the course and the department in which the course resides. Faculty development stipends are:
o $4,000 for 3‐credits or more courses
o $3,000 for 2‐credit courses
o $2,000 for 1‐credit courses

The department offering the course will receive an amount equal to 25% of the grant amount that is awarded to the faculty member. For example, if the faculty member is awarded $4,000 then an additional $1,000 stipend will be given to the department.  This stipend may be used, at the department chair’s discretion, in support of distance learning (e.g., to pay for online tutors, purchase software) or it may be used for any other purpose that is unrelated to the department’s distance learning initiative.  After the first time an online course is taught, a stipend of $500 per section will be paid to the academic department each time the online course is taught again.

Staff from UCET and IMS work closely with the faculty who are developing an online course to develop a memorandum of understanding that outlines the technical, instructional design and pedagogical support required to successfully develop the course.  The MOU includes a scope of work as well as a timeline for course delivery and includes the roles and responsibilities of all parties involved, including the chair of the department that is sponsoring the course. Courses must be completed by December 2009 and delivered spring semester 2010.

Once the course proposal is approved, the faculty member will be invited to attend a Distance
Learning Seminar offered by staff in UCET.  This seminar is a combination of online and half‐day
workshops that are related to teaching with technology.   Included is a workshop on Basic
Oncourse CL. If the course developer has already used Oncourse CL in a previous course, s/he
may not be required to attend this portion of the training.

Members of the DL Program Review Committee will review the proposals and identify the
courses that will be awarded development grants this round.

The  Distance Learning Course Development Grant Application can be downloaded from the distance learning website at distance.iusb.edu.   Faculty are asked to submit information including:

  • An outline of the proposed course
  • a plan for course transformation to an online format
  • a development budget if applicable
